Chichicastenango - Male
 Ceremonial

The male's black wool outfit with shorts looks elegant and distinguished. The panels on his sides are embroidered according to his status. The "Tzut" tied around his head with one tassel in front is made of the best silk died with "Púrpura Patula" a Seashell from Nicaragua.

Language: Quiché             Department: El Quiché

In Chichicastenango the Mayan mix their religion with the catholic church. On the steps of the church they burn "copal" to their gods, before burning candles to the saints inside. As they say, "Burn one for the God in the house, and another for the ones outside."   Chichicastenango means, "The place of the Thistles."
