Although close to Guatemala City by way the crow flies, Zacualpa is far from civilization.  A four hour drive on paved roads to Santa Cruz del Quiche and then another four hours on dirt roads, finally arriving at this remote village. (Six to seven hours in rainy season.)

The simple white trousers and black wool coat would seem dull if not for the colorful Tzut he wears on his head.  His leather sandals are similar to the ones that have been made for centuries.  The difference is that the soles are made from old tire tread.
