San Juan Atitán - Male
 Daily

The man's "capixay," the cape, is worn for show. The sleeves are narrow and not to be worn, but thrown over the shoulders.  The colorful collar and cuffs are made by their bride-to-be before marriage. They too are only for show. His sandals are heavy and hard to help him up and down the slopes. They are made from deer skin doubled over.

Language: Mam        Department: Huehuetenango

The territory around San Juan Atitán is  steep and broken with sits highest peak at 11,400 ft.  Much of it is sinking and collapsing and so endangering this village of 4,400 inhabitants, all of whom may have to move and resettle elsewhere.
